#75 All-New Jeep Compass – Meant for the streets

Most people think of Jeeps as tough off-road vehicles that love to get muddy, but when the Compass debuted for 2007, it wasn't like other Jeeps. It didn't look rugged and it didn't even like dirt. Instead, it was a car-based design built for the majority of small-SUV buyers who wanted a fuel-efficient runabout that was easy to drive around the city. Four-wheel drive was available, of course, but it was a single-speed system – enough to get you through a muddy track and that's about it.
Jeep Compass

As you can imagine, purists didn't much care for the Compass, which they regarded as the exact opposite to all things Jeep. However, for the latest model has revised styling and new found capabilities which edge the Compass closer to "real Jeep" status. So what new this time round? Well the all-new Jeep Compass comes with a new six-speed PowerTech automatic transmission, refreshed exterior and interior design and unsurpassed capability in the compact-SUV segment. The all-new Jeep Compass is offered in Sport, Latitude and Limited trim levels.

Adding an element of muscle, the hood is enhanced with a subtle power bulge. This trend continues with enhancements to the rear of the 2014 Jeep Compass. A new rear fascia, new body-colour rear spoiler and upscale touches, such as the new LED tail lamps, are visible at the back. A new plated chrome insert with recessed "Jeep" badge on the tailgate trim is visible for models equipped with a rear backup camera.

#77 Volvo XC60 – Stunning and spectacular

For more than a decade, Volvo has been working tirelessly to eliminate the boxy, dull and conservative design that haunted their past model. The outgoing XC60 broke the curse with its sexy, breathtaking and composed design that was later adopted to all Volvo models. It was such a great hit, that to this date, it remains the best-selling Volvo model. Replacing the outgoing XC60 is a refreshed model that builds on the outgoing model’s stunning looks, plus adds lots of new features that make it even more amazing.
Volvo XC60

Design
The XC60’s attacking profile, consisting of a low front and raised rear, remains unchanged. However considerable changes are visible at the front, where it gets a new bonnet, headlights, grille and lower air intake. The new headlights give the new XC60’s front a confident and focused look. The headlamps also feature a new Active High Beam Control system. The technology eliminates the need to switch between low and high beam. Instead, Active High Beam Control makes it possible keep the headlights on full beam continuously.
Striking design

When another car approaches from the opposite direction, the system helps to prevent dazzling of the oncoming driver by shading out only as much of the beam as necessary. This is done by an ingenious projector module mechanism integrated into the headlamp. Low-speed Cornering Light feature is also integrated to the Active High Beam Control system. This light up the area the driver is steering towards for safer manoeuvring.
Spacious boot

The air intakes and bonnet enhance the XC60 wide profile even further. Distinct horizontal lines and chrome bars highlight the grille’s posh look even further. The XC60 wide stance is enhanced further, by a character line that runs from the front wheel arches to the rear lights. The rear remains unchanged. Beautifully crafted vibration-free tailpipes deliver a crisp soundtrack from the engine. Sportier R-Design versions get larger alloy wheels and body kit styling.
Volvo XC60 R-Design

Safety features
IntelliSafe™, which stands for all active safety systems in all Volvos, is fitted to the XC60. The system is active from speeds of 50km/h and above. The XC60 features a Pedestrian Detection system with full auto brake. This monitors pedestrians walking in the SUV’s path. The enhanced Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) is now radar-based. BLIS monitors vehicles approaching the XC60 up to a range of up to 70 meters. The system then warns the driver of any vehicle that is approaching the SUV from the blind spot. The XC60 also features an active Cross Traffic Alert. This uses radar sensors at the rear end of the car, to alert the driver of crossing traffic when reversing out of a parking space. This is especially helpful in tight and crowded areas where the side view may be restricted.
Front design

Powerplants
Powering the new XC60 is a choice of two efficient and refined powerplants. There is a powerful 2.4 litre, 158kW (215hp) D5 turbocharged diesel engine. 420Nm of torque ensure all the wheels remain spinning on any surface. An ecofriendly D4 engine, with an output of 119kW (163hp) is also available. With a six speed manual transmission and All Wheel Drive, the Volvo XC60 consumes 5 litres per 100km. A six speed automatic is also available on order.
Under the bonnet

Striking Interior
The new XC60 benefits from new and stylish interior upgrades. The interior now features wood inlays, a new headliner, textile on the B-pillars and the silk metal frames. A new three-spoke steering wheel can be merged with paddle shifters, in an automatic transmission set-up. The paddles shifters give an enthusiastic driver additional edge, when powering round twisty roads. Behind the steering is an active TFT (Thin Film Transistor) crystal display, which celebrated its debut in the new V40. This displays the most important information in any given situation. It features three colour themes; ‘Elegance’ which has a calm blue colour, an ‘Eco’ that features a green background and ‘Performance’ that features a red background.  The XC60’s floating console is now restyled to offer more knee road to the front occupants. Numerous buttons located on the console allows for easy operations of various functions of the SUV.
Cockpit

Driver’s visibility is much improved, thanks to a wide front windshield. The windshield is electronically heated for rapid de-fogging. The infotainment comes with a new Sensus™ technology that features a Human Machine Interface (HMI). The HMI enables connection to the internet. Information is displayed via a large 7-inch display with a state-of-the-art infrared, beam-scanned touch screen. The screen can be operated even with gloves on. It is fitted on the XC60’s floating dashboard. Internet connectivity is provided by a car-mounted 3G/4G dongle or a mobile phone. It’s also possible to share a Wi-Fi network with everyone in the car. All functions can be controlled from the new steering wheel. Sporty front seats offer plenty of support especially during cornering. The rear seats provide plenty of room, while the XC60’s tall roof guarantees headroom to all occupants
A new front seat design, improves the comfort of the XC60 even further.
Rear seats

The three-split (40/20/40) rear seat and backrest offers the two separate seats with an armrest in the middle. All three seating positions have safety belts for each occupant. The seat cushions are fixed and the backrests can be individually folded. An optional power boot door can be opened automatically in three ways; via the remote control, by a button in the light panel or by opening the boot with the handle. The automatic opening feature is very convenient, if you approach the car loaded down with luggage. The loading area has a lockable load floor covering two storage areas, one for personal items and another for soiled or wet items. A large panoramic roof gives the interior an airy and fresh feeling. The roof glass is tinted and laminated.
Rear look

Verdict
The new XC60 provides fresh appeal to the entire Volvo range. Its new design tweaks will surely be a head turner. However it’s evident that Volvo is upping their Swedish game against German engineering.

#78 Volvo Estate Concept – Setting the pace for Scandinavian design

Volvo Car Group has finally revealed the third in a series of concept cars, which pave way for future models from the Scandinavian automaker. Volvo is the company that redefined the Estate car by combining functionality, sturdiness, and practicality with performance. The Volvo V70 and XC70 are among the most respected Estates on the market and the new Concept Estate points to how the company could capitalise on this heritage in its forthcoming models.
Volvo Estate Concept

The Volvo Concept Estate's most striking interior design feature is its simplicity. Just like the recent Concept Coupe and the Concept XC Coupe, the face of the Volvo Concept Estate is characterised by a new topography on the bonnet and the 'floating' grille, flanked by headlights featuring new T-shaped DRL light guides. The rear light signature is another distinctive element in Volvo Cars' new design direction.
Cockpit

The generous dash to axle ratio, low bonnet, sleek silhouette and the glass roof all contribute to the impression of a dynamic, yet capable three-door sports wagon. The contrast between the deep, dark brown pear colour and the bright five-spoke, 21-inch wheels contributes to the modern, cool aura. The rear of Concept Estate echoes the design of the Volvo 1800 ES from the early 1970s.
Comfortable seats

Occupants in all four seats are embraced by orange seat belts, and the exclusive, woven wool carpets have the same deep accent colour. The crystal gear leaver also has an orange glow, while the chequered black and white wool textile on the headliner and rear sides of the front seats adds playfulness to the 'room'. Refined, handcrafted details, such as an instrument panel covered by thick, naturally tanned saddle leather, inlays made of waxed, naturally aged wood and machined copper details, also emphasise the exclusive Swedish atmosphere inside Concept Estate.
Feline inspired curves

The traditional selection of buttons and controls have been replaced by one large tablet-like touch screen control panel in the centre console, bringing the interior firmly into the 21st century. In association with Volvo's specially designed software, the touch screen will be the main control panel for Volvo's new in-car user experience. It replaces all buttons and controls except for a few crucial functions such as volume, play/pause, hazard warning and window heaters. It also interacts seamlessly with the digital instrument cluster in front of the driver.
Striking rear design

Destiny
The Volvo Estate Concept provides a realistic approach to how future estates from the Scandinavian company will look like. If the Volvo implements the design elements visible on their next cars, they will be one of the most striking cars in the market. The good news is that we don’t have to wait for long to see the results.

Alfa Romeo MiTo

Design
The  range introduces some important new style features, starting from the new redesigned grille completed by a chrome-plated frame to create a family connection to the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, making the front of the car look more streamlined. However, the Alfa Romeo MiTo retains the frameless side windows, the three-lobed design that distinguishes the front bumper, the oblong almost cartoon-like shape of the headlights (outlined in chrome ‘mascara’) and the ‘stove plate’ LED tail-lights.
Cute front

Performance
The Alfa Romeo MiTo features an extensive range of superb engines, packed with the latest technology and bursting with performance. Not to mention the fact that Alfa Romeo power units are distinguished by their unmistakable Alfa Romeo sound that emphasises the unique nature of the car. Cockpit

Interior
The Alfa MiTo measures 4.06 metres long, 1.44 metres high and 1.72 metres, which provides excellent interior space. This makes for an outstanding amount of room for both driver and passengers. There are four new upholstery combinations to choose from two new Evoluzione fabrics (Black/Titanium or Black/Red) for Distinctive, the QV Sportiva pack with a new sporty seat and white inserts (available for Distinctive only) and the new Heritage Black fabric with electrically welded Alfa Romeo badge.
Rear seats
The Alfa Romeo MiTo driving position is spot on while the comfortable and supportive front seats give the driver a clear view of the road ahead. The steering wheel is adjustable both in height and position. The rear accommodation is spacious and roomy enough for two adults. The boot volume measures 270-litres. It can be increased further by folding down the rear seats.
Compact dimensions at the rear

Verdict
The Alfa MiTo is a truly likable hatchback. Thanks to the latest updates, it’s now a fun one as well. Given that it is also well equipped, good looking, cheap to run and practical, there is more reason than ever to want this junior Alfa. Sadly, the Alfa Romeo brand is not represented by any franchise holder at the moment.

#80 Volvo S60 – Demonstrating the epic Swedish design

Initially Volvo wanted their S60 to be a stylish, sporty equivalent to the German competition. Its outgoing model had an appealing design never seen before on Volvo models. The outgoing S60’s low grille, large air intake and the ‘twin’ headlamps design made it a must have Volvo product. However some critics still claimed that they had gone a bit overboard with the design. Volvo listened to their pleas and has debut a new S60, which features a more purposeful and dynamic design. Other famous S60 attributes such as safety and quality remain unchanged. Seems the Swedish company has decided to face the German completion in the best way possible; through razor precision engineering.
Volvo S60

Design
The Volvo S60’s front has been completely updated. It design seems to be inspired by the new V40 hatchback. The toned down headlamps, raised front grille and numerous chrome touches have some V40 looks in their design.  The S60 appealing and determined face is enriched by the new headlamps. They now feature a new Active High Beam Control system, which actively dips the headlights when another car approaches from the opposite direction. This helps reduce dazing to other drivers. A raised bonnet, with aerodynamic curves, funnels air away from the front.  A new wide grille, daytime LED lights and larger lower air adorn the front.
Front look
Volvo designers have also emphasized the S60 horizontal lines. The lines help to bring out the car’s wide stance. The outgoing model’s predominant coupe shape has been toned down as well.  It hugs the road via large 18-inch wheels. At the rear, the S60 signature rear LED lights give the S60 a clearly identifiable look especially at night. New vibration free exhaust pipes are visible on the S60’s new diffuser. They have a chrome outline that adds to the rear’s new appealing design. The S60’s dynamic looks can be further emphasized with an R
-Design package. The package gives the S60 larger alloy wheels and sporty body kit styling.
Coupe inspired profile

Power train
The new S60 comes with a refined four-cylinder D2 Diesel engine, with an output of 85kW (115hp). The engine is mated to a six speed manual as standard. A six-speed automatic transmission is also available. With the manual gear box, the new V60 requires 4.1-litres of fuel to cover 100km. The automatic D3 101kW (136 hp) and D4 121kW (163 hp) versions of the new Volvo S60 use 4.9 litres of fuel to cover the same distance. Petrol versions of the S60 come with two 1.6-litre GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) engines. There is the T4 GTDi powerplant with an output of 134kW (180 hp) and the 111kW (150 hp) T3 GTDi fireplant. Both engines are mated to a 6 speed automatic gearbox. Fuel consumption is pegged at 6.8 litres per 100km. The car’s dynamic handling capabilities are attributed to a four new chassis types. There is Touring, Dynamic, Four-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) and Lower Sport Chassis (fitted on the outgoing R-Spec models)
Classy and composed

Safety features
A new IntelliSafe™ active safety system is fitted to all Volvo models in the entire range. The system is active from speed of 50km/h and above. A Pedestrian Detection system, with full auto brake, monitors pedestrians walking in the Saloon’s path.  A Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) uses radars to monitors vehicles approaching the car, at a range of up to 70 meters. BLIS then warns the driver of any vehicle that is approaching the car from the blind spot. Cross Traffic Alert system uses radar sensors at the rear end of the car. The system then alerts the driver to crossing traffic from the sides, when reversing out of a parking space. This is especially helpful in tight and crowded areas where the side view may be restricted.
Cockpit

Interior
The S60 has plenty of room for five occupants. Just like the V40 hatchback, the new S60 comes with a large and wide instrument panel, fitted with stylish dials. The center instrument dial has a TFT (thin film transistor) screen. This displays information about the car and is located behind the steering wheel.  It has three theme setting. There is "Eco" theme which has a green background. The theme also comes with an economy meter that helps the driver to drive as economically as possible. A green light is illuminated when your eco driving is optimal. Next is the "Performance" theme, which has a red background illumination. Its power meter tells the driver how much power is being used and how much is available. In this mode, the tachometer is centralized on the instrument display, and speed is shown digitally. The last theme is the "Elegance". This has an amber illumination and gives a more conventional dash display. It's perfect for calm and a relaxing drive.
Front seats

The floating centre console is now more sculpted. The center console is larger at the top and shrinks as it drops to the bottom. This boots knee room for both the driver and front passenger. The centre console comes as standard in charcoal colour. It can be upgraded to Shimmer Graphic colourin higher trim levels. Modern Wood and Centre Court trims are available. The infotainment system sits at in the upper part of the centre console. It’s available as either a 5-inch screen or a 7-inch screen. All functions can be controlled from the steering wheel or by controls directly below the screen. Luxury materials, including leather, aluminium and high-quality fabrics, are used throughout the interior. The front seats have a sporty design while the outer rear seats are also noticeably sculpted, to offer greater comfort and support. The rear seats can fold down to boost rear storage space.
Rear seats

There is extensive storage space all round the S60’s interior. Below the armrest is a storage compartment suitable for CDs and other small items. It also has a connector for either USB/iPod or AUX. Two cup holders and a 12V power outlet are integrated in the console in front of the armrest. The glove box is refrigerated with cold air from the Electronic Climate Control system. The ambient interior lighting gives a theatre like theme. It does this via LED lamps that light up at strategic places in the interior. Once can choose between seven different modes for interior lighting. The reading lights front and rear can also be dimmed automatically. A gearshift knob, which is transparent and LED-illuminated from inside,is available for both automatic and manual transmissions. LED lights also illuminate the door panel storage pockets.
Restyled rear

Verdict
The new S60’s new looks give it a serious look. Volvo has made a bold move with this particular S60. It’s now evident that Volvo is upping their Swedish game against German engineering. Whether it has the grunt to take on the Germans will be revealed when it goes on sale in Europe later this year.

#81 Alfa Romeo Giulietta – Renewed and Stylish

The Giulietta is probably the best selling Alfa Romeo in recent times. The name Giulietta is a tribute to an automobile and an Alfa Romeo legend. In the Fifties, the 1954 Giulietta caught the imagination of car enthusiasts throughout the world, making the dream of owning an Alfa Romeo and enjoying its high level of comfort and technical excellence accessible for the first time. Years on, Alfa Romeo has released an updated version of the modern Giulietta.
Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Exterior
The new changes begin at the front with the new look grille and the chrome-plated frame of the fog lights. The 2014 Alfa Romeo Giulietta front headlights have DRL with LED technology and a day light function for maximum active safety. The innovative rear lights use LED technology in the same way, which serves not only a stylish purpose but also preventive safety. Finally, the three new alloy wheels (16-, 17- and 18-inches) clearly highlight the profile of the 2014 Alfa Romeo Giulietta. The side windows recall the appearance of a coupe and emphasise the dynamism and fluidity of the profile, which is further enhanced by the concealed rear door handles. The ribs on the vehicle sides elongate the car while the clean lines, which end at the rear, accentuate the angular shape of the car body.
Composed front

Performance
New to the Alfa Romeo Giulietta is the 150hp/111kW 2.0 JTDM power unit. Using a small-sized turbocharger means delivering the highest torque in the segment at low rpm (380 Nm at 1750 rpm) and maximum running flexibility. All the engines are combined with a state-of-the-art manual 6-speed gearbox, which can withstand and transmit high maximum torque values.
Simplistic cockpit

Interior
Attention to detail and high quality materials chosen to represent the ultimate expression of Italian style. What particularly stand out are new door panels, handles and the brand new insert on the central console and dashboard. All elements are treated with uniform scratch-proof paint and the trims are homogeneous in colour and materials. The result is a superior quality environment that welcomes passengers into a warm and enveloping atmosphere. The seats and steering wheel are new, too, and further highlight the perceived quality and on-board comfort. The luggage compartment has been renewed with a specific black trim for the entire volume. The storage compartment on the left of the steering wheel, the upper glove compartment on the dashboard and the USB port are placed close to the DNA selector. Alfa Romeo DNA selector which allows driver to choose between three different driving settings: Dynamic, Normal and All-Weather, this setting controls the behaviour of engine, brakes, steering, suspension and gearbox.
Rear design

Verdict
No question, the Giulietta is a better class of Alfa, and vastly more convincing than most of its rivals. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta's competitiveness stems from the excellence of a platform that delivers on chassis dynamics, packaging and safety. If you want to experience the Alfa Romeo charm but you don’t have plenty to spend on a classic then I suggest you try the hot 2014 Giulietta.
